Symptoms of Fractures, Breaks, and Sprains

Ankle Sprain

An ankle sprain is a sudden outward or inward motion of the foot and or ankle, stretching and or rupturing the ligaments, joint capsule and tendons, usually leaving the bone structures intact and unaffected. Depending on the severity of the sprain, one can experience an array of symptoms from mild pain to severe bruising accompanied by swelling. A sprain is the damage of soft tissue, a break is the bone. It is not always easy to tell the difference between a break and an ankle sprain.

Brake

There are several common brakes dealt with at the office ankle break, toe break, metatarsal break (the bones the toes attach to). A symptom of a break is pain with walking and weight bearing, bruising and swelling.

Stress Fractures

Stress fractures come from an accumulation of use and a fracture that develops because not enough time elapses between use for the bone to recover. Over time this causes tiny fractures to occur in the bone. Common lower extremity areas for this to occur are in the heel and shin bones. Symptoms of a stress fracture is pain with walking and weight bearing, some swelling and typically there is no bruising.
